Toyota over-engineered the 2JZ-GTE well past what its 320 hp output required: a closed-deck iron block, forged internals, and sequential twin turbochargers, all built with the margin of an engine designed to last rather than to hit a number. Tuners found that margin and never stopped exploring it. Four-figure power outputs on the original block became routine, which is not a sentence that applies to almost any other production engine.
